Ion exchange silica SPE phases depend on ionic interactions for the extraction of ionizable compounds from various sample matrices. These phases are more dependent on pH, ionic strength, and counterion strength than on solvent strength. Both anion and cation exchange phases are available for the extraction of acidic and basic analytes respectively.
